Sea Temple joining Accor
THE Port Douglas Sea Temple Spa and Resort is being handed over as part of international company Accor’s takeover of Mirvac’s hotel business in a $327-million deal.
The deal includes Cairns resorts Sebel Cairns, Harbourlights and the Sea Temple Spa and Resort in Palm Cove and has made Accor the largest hotel operator in the Far North.
Accor has promised no redundancies for the 200 people employed in the four resorts and Accor spokesman Peter Hook said it will be “business as usual”.
“While the agreement is being signed it’s going to take until at least June before the settlement of the contract is completed,” he said.
“Over this six-month period we will be speaking to every hotel in the Mirvac group and discussing with them how Accor can help improve their market and help integrate the hotel into the Accor market.
“Until the end of June it will be very much business as usual, Sea Temple is a fantastic brand as a hotel, one of the most outstanding hotels in Australia and what Accor will be looking to do is provide extra opportunities for the hotel.”
Accor is the largest hotel group in China, Indonesia, India with a hotel network of 200 in Australia and over 4000 globally.
“Accor is the largest hotel group in Asia, the biggest new market for North Queensland and Accor’s involvement with Sea Temple could add extra business to the hotel,” Mr Hook said.
“It’s really a case of they’ve established a very good name for themselves, a good profile but what Accor can bring to that hotel is a much wider market, both externally particularly with Asia but also within Australia’s meeting and conference markets for instance.
“We will really push Port Douglas, it’s a very important hotel on our international map.”
The first step in the takeover, apart from the settlement, is for Accor to meet with the management of Sea Temple and discuss what they have done and how the company can help.
“By becoming part of the largest network in Australia and Asia-pacific, for the staff there, it offers exceptional opportunity to grow their own career and bring some very experienced people,” Mr Hook said.
