Cyclone shelter work to start in February
QUEENSLAND company Northbuild Construction has been awarded the contract for the $5.5 million Port Douglas cyclone shelter and aims to start by the end of February.
Northbuild, which has five offices from its head office in Brisbane to Cairns, will be calling for expressions of interest later this month for local subcontractors and suppliers.
Project Director Mark Hamill said they are in the early stages and plan to complete the shelter by the end of October.
“Our intention is to wait until the end the current cyclone season before starting on site, there’s no point coming up and getting rained off in the first four weeks, that’s why we’re looking at the end of February,” he said.
“The delayed start allows us more time to engage the local market, it’s beneficial to utilise local resources on any construction project and certainly on regional projects.
“The local resources typically have been there for some time and have the experience and ability to make things happen and we are very excited to be starting the New Year with such a significant project in such a fantastic part of our state.”
The shelter will accommodate 780 people to service all of Port Douglas, Mossman, Oak Beach, Cooya Beach, Newell Beach, Wonga Beach, Lower Daintree and Cape Tribulation.
“The Queensland Government has been working closely with us over the last two months and invested significant time and money in the design of the shelters so they are fit for the purpose and also value for money,” Mr Hamill said.
“The concept is to not only provide a place to protect the communities in cyclonic regions but also provide multi function buildings that can be enjoyed all year round.
“Each of the shelters will be the same in structure and will vary only in external works, landscaping and access requirements.
“The design was standardised to ensure they all met the criteria but also prevent the need for unnecessary expenditure.”
