Call to extend free Daintree ferry until Easter
DIVISION 10 councillor Julia Leu has called for the free Daintree ferry pass for all Cairns residents to be extended until the Easter school holidays.
Cairns Regional Council trialled the free ferry service for everyone within the council’s boundaries for two months until January 15.
Cr Leu is now calling for the free pass to be extended until the Easter school holidays but “we must act quickly before the momentum is lost”.
Cr Leu said a meeting of tourism operators at Cow Bay this week were thrilled at the response of people using the pass and making the trip across the river.
“The operators of the many diverse businesses said they saw concrete results of the ferry pass initiative and want it extended,” Cr Leu said.
“I put this to council yesterday at its first general meeting of the year and they agreed to consider the proposal.
“The council unanimously agreed, pending a report by officers that will go before the Finance and Administration meeting of Council on February 15, to fully support the trial of extending the free pass until the Easter holidays,” Cr Leu said.
During the free ferry pass promotion, 1128 cards were issued with 581 cards actually used from which 806 trips were undertaken by residents.
