Goodbye to ‘babies’

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Bye Dad:

DOZENS of mums and dads from the Douglas region waved goodbye to their “babies” as they started primary school for the first time on Monday.

While most of the four and five-year-old Prep students were excited to start their first day of school, many parents had to put on a brave face until sending them off before shedding a quiet tear.

The Mathews family has relocated to Port Douglas from Canberra and Kira, 10, Jet, nine, and four-year-old Rory were happy to start their first day at Port Douglas State School.

Year 5 student Kira is very excited and nervous about starting a new school and making new friends but admitted to having “a few butterflies”, while Jet also had a few nerves.

Rory said he was “good” and very happy to be making new friends.

Parents Graeme and Jenny Brown walked four-year-old Summer to her first day of school with three-year-old Chasey and were sad to see her off.

“I’m not as excited as she is,” Jenny said.

“That’s the bell ringing, we’re late - this is a sign of the next 12 years.”
