Dragons set to rejoin Premiership

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

With only a matter of weeks until the season kicks off, Marsh believes the Dragons are well placed for Premiership success.

“Initially our goal and focus is to be competitive, pick up some points in the first six weeks and hopefully make the semi-finals,” he said.

“We have a great core team retained from the previous two seasons and there is always the promise of picking up one or two talented backpackers to fill out the squad.”

Cassowary Park also has the addition of new major sponsors, Verri Industries.

“The club is in a better financial position this year which helps, also the nomination fee to play in the premiership of $2000 has been dropped to $200,” Marsh said.

Lack of players and sufficient sponsorship led to the Dragons dropping out of the premiership back in 2008.

But the Dragons are determined to be a force in the top division this time around.

“We are looking for more players to join the team, we are flexible with experience levels as we’ll hopefully have enough players to have a premiership and reserves team, although obviously the more experienced players we recruit the better,” Marsh said.

“We won everything we played in 2010 - hopefully we can continue to do well in the Premier League.

“Whichever way you look at it there are exciting times ahead for the Douglas United Dragons.”
