Solar rebate axed

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - BUSINESS -

THE Federal Government rebate on solar hot water systems was axed overnight last week, leaving many households in the cold. The renewable energy bonus scheme gave a $1000 rebate for solar hot water and $600 for a hot water pump as part of the 2010 stimulus plan and was supposed to end my the middle of the year. The sudden cancellation has left many households reconsidering their options and costs and has left more than just the solar industry in the lurch. Plumbers in the Douglas region have been affected by the Federal Government’s sudden change of heart including Cyril “Brownie” Brown of Brownies Plumbing and Gas. “It has an effect on all plumbers because we do the installation,” he said. “A lot of people rely heavily on the subsidy and if $1000 is taken off they can’t do it.” Anyone who has already paid a deposit or the full amount for a solar hot water system are still eligible for the rebate but have to apply before June.
