Sharkettes on the prowl for new recruits
THE Sharkettes are on the hunt for new recruits to strut their stuff on and off the field.
The club is holding its annual general meeting at the Mossman Showgrounds on March 15 and is keen to hear from prospective players and committee members.
Cairns District Women’s Rugby League president and Sharkettes foundation team member Petrina Neller is on a recruitment drive to encourage more women to join the sport, meet people, get fit, get tough and become part of the team.
“It is not only a sport, it’s a social thing too,” she said.
“We train on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Mossman Showgrounds from 5pm and anyone who is interested is welcome to come along.
“We need some more girls to join the club - it doesn’t matter if they’re small or haven’t played the game before, we can put them on the wing. And we are looking for volunteers to fill the positions of club president, treasurer and secretary as well as fundraising committee members.”
The official sign-on day for the women’s rugby league for the whole Cairns region is 6-8pm on March 16 at the Ivanhoe Showgrounds.
Anyone over 40 will need to bring a medical certificate and any girls turning 17, the minimum age for the league, will need to bring a birth certificate. The league is hoping NRL star Preston Campbell and Northern Pride coach David Maiden will be there on the night.
Ms.neller said that players could expect to travel with the team around the region playing in both home and away matches.
The Mossman Sharkettes AGM will be held from 6.30pm on Thursday, March 15 at the Mossman Showgrounds.
