Scammers alert

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

POLICE remind people to be on the alert for scams following a failed phone-scam attempt on a Cairns man last week.

The man received a call from a woman claiming to be from his bank, advising him of an accounting error and a $5000 discrepancy because of it.

The man was asked to deposit money into another account to cover an administration fee to cover the outstanding fees from discrepancy.

Luckily the man realised the request was not legitimate and ended the call, avoiding being a target of what police call an ’advanced fee fraud’.

Police said the fraud attempt is common and residents need to be aware similar scams can occur, for more information visit www. scamwatch.gov.au
