Free training to give boost

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - BUSINESS - ANGELIQUE PATTERSON

THE Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce is aiming to build business confidence with a free training program designed for supervisors, managers and small business owners.

With a focus on basic business principles and customer service, the “Building business confidence Port Douglas” course is a 13-week program aimed at equipping participants with the tools to be confident about improving customer service.

Chamber vice-president and HR Dynamics owner Phoebe Kitto secured government funding to run the course and is also offering free places to mature-age job seekers who wish to return to the workforce and are seeking an opportunity.

“If you’re not confident in what you’re doing and not providing good customer service it reflects through to the consumer,” she said.

“Businesses need to be confident and need to have the skills and the ability to follow through.”

The course is designed to increase business confidence, improve business insight and improve the products and services in the area.

“Commercial service, financial planning, consistency of everyday good business and commitment in your business - that’s where I saw the biggest gap,” Ms Kitto said.

“We need to work with the manager and business owner to have an influence over the transient staff.”

Businesses not involved in the course can still attend sessions involving guest speakers and there will be a graduation at the end of the course.

“It’s really tiring going through tough times, going through that doom and gloom, which seems to have gone on for a couple of years now,” Ms Kitto said.

“It’s very easy to get ’poor-me’ mentality and think it’s everyone else’s fault.

“It’s time businesses start thinking what can we do in our business, what can we be doing to be proactive and this course gives people strategies they can use to make their business better.”

Each session goes for two hours, or four hours for the three diploma modules, and participants can choose between sessions on Tuesdays from 11am or Thursdays from 5pm.

The pilot program only has space for 20 businesses and starts next Tuesday, April 3. For more information or to book your spot contact Phoebe Kitto on 0438 735 926 or email phoebe@hrdynam
