Shire hall birthday makeover
MOSSMAN’S most well-known building, the shire hall, is about to turn 75 years old and the community is being asked to come along and be a part of a special walk down memory lane.
To help celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mossman Shire Hall, the Cairns Regional Council will hold an exhibition titled Memory Lane, showcasing the rich local history of this much-loved community building.
The four-day exhibition will be officially opened on the evening of June 22, in celebration of the Hall’s official opening in June 1937. Council is pres
ently asking people if they have any photographs and memorabilia from musicals, school concerts, community events, Mill Street parades, debutante balls, Show Queen cabarets, old time dances, weddings and other events held at the hall during the past 75 years that they would like to put on display.
“The aim of the exhibition is to celebrate Mossman Shire Hall’s 75th anniversary and give the community an opportunity to come together, reminisce and provide an insight into yesteryear,” the council’s Douglas regional manager Liz Collyer said.
“We are hoping the community will support the exhibition by sharing their memories with us through their photos and mementos from local events.”
To be a part of the exhibition you need to fill out an expression of interest form to be lodged with the council by April 30. Anyone seeking further information on the exhibition can email comdevdouglas@cairns. qld.gov.au or phone Helen Coulthard on 4099 9484.
The hall is undergoing a refurbishment, which will be completed in time for the 75th anniversary party.
