Our IGA is safe

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - BUSINESS -

PORT DOUGLAS’S IGA is safe from the firing line after the immediate closure of five Cornett’s stores was announced early last week.

Three Walters IGA will also close and a further 18 outlets will be sold after parent company Metcash announced restructures last week.

Cornetts and Walters is a joint-venture business in Queensland for the national company, which has felt the impact of deflation in the market, natural disasters and the downturn in tourism.

The five IGAS set to close are loss-making stores and Cornetts CEO Graham Booysen said that is why the IGA in Port Douglas is safe, when asked if it would close.

“No it won’t be closed, simple as that,” he said.

“Port Douglas is fine, it continues to trade well and has a strong involvement in the community and is safe.”
