Unity has a strong candidate in Division 10 in Pete Smith. Pete is a long term resident of the Mossman/port Douglas area and has also been in business there most of this time. Unity is committed to Division 10 and the Mossman/port Douglas/daintree regions. In fact we are the only ones who have demonstrated this sort of commitment by standing a candidate in all Divisions. Immediately upon election and in consultation with the local community we will initiate an immediate review of the proposed waterfront project so as to ensure - a) the scope of the work is clearly understood by all, b) cost and cost allocations are clear, c) a works program is established, d) critical path milestones are agreed. My priorities for the Douglas region is to provide for the ‘good government’ of that area including - a) transparency and effectiveness, b) serving the public interest, c) sustainable development and management of infrastructure and assets, d) social inclusion, e) community engagement. The retention of farming land will be a high priority for a Unity Council. We will be keen to work with industry representatives from within Div 10 to understand what future opportunities might be available and how these might be converted. Will you pursue a lowering in rates in line with the significant land devaluations as has occurred in the majority of the Douglas region . . . Why, or why not? Unity will operate a ‘low cost base’ Council. Successfully implemented this will transfer through to lower costs for ratepayers. The relationship between valuations and rates is not a direct one and I cannot give a simple answer to your proposition.
