MOSS­MAN’S Yoland “Yolly” Bosiger is about to em­bark on the most ex­cit­ing year of her life af­ter re­ceiv­ing a Rolex Schol­ar­ship from the Our World-un­der­wa­ter Schol­ar­ship So­ci­ety.

The 25-year-old has al­ready sailed half way around the world, vol­un­teered in South Africa with Great White sharks, re­searched pi­ra­nhas at the head wa­ters of the Ama­zon and re­cently been awarded top hon­ours stu­dent for bi­o­log­i­cal sci­ence at JCU Townsville.

The next chap­ter for the tal­ented sci­ence stu­dent with the OWUSS will be work­ing with lead­ers in ma­rine-re­lated fields and join in with sci­en­tific ex­pe­di­tions, un­der­wa­ter re­search, field study, lab­o­ra­tory as­sign­ments and equip­ment test­ing and de­sign.

The OWUSS an­nu­ally pro­vides schol­ar­ship to three young peo­ple who are con­sid­er­ing ca­reers in the un­der­wa­ter world and Ms Bosiger was this year’s Aus­tralasian re­cip­i­ent, to join schol­ars from North Amer­ica and Europe.

Ms Bosiger’s love for the ocean can be at­trib­uted to be­ing born in Cyprus to Ja­nis and Lorenz Bosiger dur­ing their world cir­cum­nav­iga- tion on their 38ft sloop SY Lim­er­ick Lady.

She was home schooled un­til her fam­ily set­tled in Moss­man, where Ms Bosiger at­tended Moss­man State Pri­mary and grad­u­ated from Moss­man State High School in 2005 with high dis­tinc­tions.

Ms Bosiger be­came a dive mas­ter dur­ing a gap year with Ca­lypso Dive, Port Dou­glas and went on to study law and sci­ence ma­jor­ing in ma­rine bi­ol­ogy at JCU Townsville.

She will spend a year trav­el­ling ex­ten­sively to gain ex­po­sure and get hands-on ex­pe­ri­ence in ac­tiv­i­ties af­ter be­ing in­ducted into the so­ci­ety in New York re­cently for the Rolex schol­ar­ship.

Ms Bosiger hopes to de­velop her tech­ni­cal div­ing and un­der­wa­ter pho­tog­ra­phy skills and also wants to learn more about ma­rine sci­ence and con­ser­va­tion so one day she can use both her sci­en­tific and le­gal knowl­edge to de­velop bet­ter pro­tec­tion for vi­tally im­por­tant un­der­wa­ter ecosys­tems.
