Ocean girl flfl oating
MOSSMAN’S Yoland “Yolly” Bosiger is about to embark on the most exciting year of her life after receiving a Rolex Scholarship from the Our World-underwater Scholarship Society.
The 25-year-old has already sailed half way around the world, volunteered in South Africa with Great White sharks, researched piranhas at the head waters of the Amazon and recently been awarded top honours student for biological science at JCU Townsville.
The next chapter for the talented science student with the OWUSS will be working with leaders in marine-related fields and join in with scientific expeditions, underwater research, field study, laboratory assignments and equipment testing and design.
The OWUSS annually provides scholarship to three young people who are considering careers in the underwater world and Ms Bosiger was this year’s Australasian recipient, to join scholars from North America and Europe.
Ms Bosiger’s love for the ocean can be attributed to being born in Cyprus to Janis and Lorenz Bosiger during their world circumnaviga- tion on their 38ft sloop SY Limerick Lady.
She was home schooled until her family settled in Mossman, where Ms Bosiger attended Mossman State Primary and graduated from Mossman State High School in 2005 with high distinctions.
Ms Bosiger became a dive master during a gap year with Calypso Dive, Port Douglas and went on to study law and science majoring in marine biology at JCU Townsville.
She will spend a year travelling extensively to gain exposure and get hands-on experience in activities after being inducted into the society in New York recently for the Rolex scholarship.
Ms Bosiger hopes to develop her technical diving and underwater photography skills and also wants to learn more about marine science and conservation so one day she can use both her scientific and legal knowledge to develop better protection for vitally important underwater ecosystems.
Ms Bosiger will be required to write a journal and blog documenting her underwater experiences throughout her year which you can follow at www.owuscholarship.org
