Race for Division 10 place
THE race to represent Division 10 on the Cairns Regional Council is shaping up as an intriguing contest.
Incumbent Julia Leu has done an admirable job in difficult circumstances as the first local councillor since the de-amalgamation of the Douglas Shire in 2008 but faces some stiff competition to retain her position.
Port Douglas businessman Pete Smith is the Unity team’s candidate and with Bob Manning the hot favourite to win the mayoral race he is sure to attract strong support.
Former Douglas Shire Council CEO Terry Melchert, who was sacked in 2007 and later won a huge payout, has promised improved financial management and more community consultation.
Palm Cove’s Bob Shaw, the founding president of Tourism Palm Cove and former board member of TTNQ, claims the north- ern beaches have been neglected and adds another element to the mix.
Regardless of who wins on Saturday, they have a huge job ahead of them delivering outcomes for what is undoubtedly the toughest job in local politics due to the huge area and diverse interests the Division encompasses.
