I WWOULD like to endorse Juliaju Leu, the current Divisiondiv 10 councillor as the only choice at this Saturday’s election.
I think she has exceeded all expectations in terms of commitment, ability, community knowledge and determination.
Julia has been looking after the interests of the old Douglas Shire, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove under the most difficult circumstances.
The majority of Cairns councillors treat Douglas as precious, demanding, difficult and unreasonable.
Those things that are precious to us make no sense to the CRC machine - for example, chemical-free water, fixed urban boundaries, our own unique tourism and agricultural industries and a strong conservation ethos.
Julia is conciliatory on the one hand, much more than I ever was, determined on the other.
Her responsibilities have been huge - we are a diverse community, which now includes Clifton Beach and Palm Cove, an area bigger than all the rest of the other divisions combined, and previously served by a total of six councillors and mayor.
Douglas has its own international tourism industry, sugar industry and conservation icons of international significance.
I know it is impossible to please everyone but the other candidates are not in the same league.
Pete Smith has no record of broad-based community service, nor any experience of local government.
Terry Melchert was dismissed as the CEO of the former Douglas Shire Council following an independent performance assessment and I’ve never heard of the bloke from the northern beaches.
It’s time to end the extravagance and balance the budget to lower our rates.
