Meditation spaces for public places
MEDITATION Spaces for Public Places is an idea I’ve recently hatched.
My vision is to see the construction of a structure or small building (in the best case scenario) designed with considerable artistic input for the free use of groups and individuals for the purpose of communal meditation or self-reflection and support groups. The site would ideally be a spot of natural beauty and tranquility.
I presume a location in Port Douglas for easy access by locals and visitors would be preferred by most, though I believe there are merits for it being further afield also - Mowbray for instance - so think widely.
The purpose of including artistic input is to address the shameful lack of public art in Port Douglas as well as to construct something beautiful and positive in its own right, and that’s conducive for meditation and reflects what the building stands for.
The design would exhibit a secular aesthetic, which in turn reflects secular and inclusive values of the community at large.
In order to realise this project, land, funds, community support and involvement is sought.
I appeal, particularly at this point in time, to anyone who could donate a suitable piece of land for the purpose.
While nothing is being ruled out, this letter is addressed to private citizens and organisations. Ideally the spot would be surrounded by parkland, forest or water views but any offer would be gratefully considered. Free public access is essential.
To spark your imagination to the possibilities, I want to share some of my wildest ideas.
The project could be a bubble of glass or perspex submerged into the murky waters off Four Mile Beach (like the Green Island observatory), positioned at the end of a jetty out over the sea; hovering above the mud at the end of a boardwalk into the mangrove thicket neighbouring the sports grounds; nestled back into the coconut and acacia groves on the foreshore of Four Mile Beach or wedged into the side of Flagstaff Hill with an outlook over the Coral Sea - but I appreciate I may have to settle for considerably less.
I would also like to start a group asap for mindfulness meditation. Phone 4098 5358 or email email@example.com if you are interested.
