Ju­nior net­ballers kick off sea­son

DOU­GLAS Ju­niors started sec­ond round last Tues­day at Port Courts with the Pythons tak­ing on the Net Set Go girls.

This is a train­ing/play ses­sion for the girls with the older girls be­ing role mod­els for the learner net­ballers.

The Pythons in their flash new pur­ple skirts looked fan­tas­tic, thanks to coach Meg and mum Virginia Goodall for mak­ing up the skirts.

Tayhla Ca­di­ente put in some great plays and Fauve Salleras was ex­cel­lent in de­fence. The Net Set Go team played some great net­ball show­ing the skills they have learned over the 10-week course Edie Thurtell and Anna Padovan were ex­cep­tional on the court. Final score a 1-all tie.

The Gla­di­a­tors took on the Wild­cats. For the Gla­di­a­tors Carla Young put in an ex­cel­lent game and Keely Poole is ever im­prov­ing and show­ing great skills on the court. The Wild­catz took a lit­tle while to gel as a team this week but im­proved greatly in the sec­ond half, Kate Padovan lead well in at­tack and Macken­zie Booth put in a great de­fen­sive game. Final score Gla­di­a­tors 6 bt Wild­catz 2.

The Croc Di­a­monds played the Miallo Al­ls­tars. The Di­a­monds ap­plied pres­sure from the start and jumped out to an early lead, Miallo came back strongly but the Di­a­monds de­fence was up to the task deny­ing Miallo any shots at goal. With some po­si­tion changes Miallo stepped up and Lana Bax­ter was able to take some shots at goal, scor­ing in the third quar­ter. Sharp shoot­ing sis­ters Bon­nie and Kyah Fran­cis sealed out the match.

The score didn’t re­flect the never say die at­ti­tude of Miallo. Final score Di­a­monds 23 bt Miallo 1.

The Poi­son Ap­ples played the Red Hot Pep­pers, the Ap­ples be­ing the older team played very good net­ball with their ex­pe­ri­ence show­ing at ev­ery move, Denby Woods was an ex­cel­lent de­fence in Keeper with some very ac­cu­rate pass­ing and Lau­ren Sci­acca played well shoot­ing a great goal from dis­tance. The Pep­pers are gain­ing mo­men­tum as a team, Ge­or­gia Mccarthy cov­ered the court well and Mia Lowen­steinJones, up from 10s de­fended very well around the goal cir­cle. Final score Ap­ples 12 bt Pep­pers 1.

The 14-16 comp was a re­play of last year’s grand final, Dy­na­mite played a very nice fluid game with some great pass­ing be­tween Yas­min Stievano, Bronte Lowen­stein-jones and Bry­die Tregea also kept up with her op­po­nent 100 per cent through­out the game. For Vipers Saisha Scho­nen­berger de­fended re­ally well along with Jess Ea­gleRowe, the Dy­na­mites came out the vic­tors 10-6.

The Sap­phires played the Un­der-12 rep­re­sen­ta­tive team, the Sap­phires con­trolled the game from the first quar­ter with great pass­ing be­tween Maddy Weaver, Daisy Hawkes and Holly Brown around the Goal cir­cle, the Reps found their feet in the sec­ond and third quar­ters show­ing some great team­work, Piper Adams, in great form worked the cir­cle and Alee­sha Vi­ola read the play well, de­fend­ing strongly. Final score Sap­phires bt Reps 7.

The Break­ers played the Young Fu­sion team, for the Break­ers Ge­or­gia Dun­can was ex­cel­lent in de­fence and Tyler Mous put in a very strong game against the tal­ented Hazuki Kirby, Tully Case is show­ing great im­prove­ment as a sec­ond year player.

The Fu­sion girls passed the ball well with very good tim­ing, Elle Kadwell dis­played ef­fi­cient space aware­ness and po­si­tioned her­self well to take the passes. Final score Fu­sion 22 bt Break­ers 2.

Great job by ju­nior um­pires Sascha Lowen­stein-jones, Cartier Ben­nett, Keely Harold, Tiah Mclean, Maddy Weaver, Holly Brown, Eleisha Meal­ing, Mar­ley Cairns, Tayler Durie, Saisha Scho­nen­berger, Rachael Ram­say and Vanessa Woods.

The Mar­lin Coast Net­ball Car­ni­val will be played in In­n­is­fail this year on May 12-13, Dou­glas Net­ball is invit­ing all play­ers from Un­der-11 to se­niors di­vi­sions 1 or 2 to play in­di­vid­u­ally or as a team, nom­i­na­tions close tonight at 4pm.
