Widespread support for decision

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

Cane grower Gerard Puglisi: “It’s a good thing especially for the local farmers. It will give us more security and the confidence to invest in new equipment for our farms.” Mossman Chamber of Commerce president Kraig Byrnes: “It’s great that Mackay Sugar has the confidence in the local area by buying the mill and keeping on the mill workers is just terrific. Mackay spending locally will also be a boost for our local economy.” Mossman Canegrowers chairman Drew Watson: “I think it is a good move. Mackay Sugar thinks along very much the same lines as we do and so we’re confident of good things happening now and into the future. That’s the other big plus is confidence - it will return confidence to the region in a number of positive ways.” Mossman Central Mill chairman Bill Phillips-turner: “This is welcome news. This ensures we stay as part of a grower-owned company that is well capitalised and has a strong focus on grower relations. Mackay Sugar also supports Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) which is crucial in marketing our sugar to the world.” Mossman Agricultural manager Daryl Parker: “I have been away and so I haven’t had a chance to be involved firsthand but I have had a number of different people ring me and tell me it was a positive for the industry and the region and I’m inclined to agree with them. It should give a lot of confidence to the growers with some of them replanting and buying new equipment and undertaking more rigorous maintenance programs which will all filter down to all of our local traders which will give us all a much-needed lift.” Cane grower Doug Crees: “At this stage I think the news is good but there will be a shareholders’ meeting sometime next week and I will know more then.”
