Editor’s comment:

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FEEDBACK - Greg Mclean Managing editor

NEW Mayor of Cairns Regional Council Bob Manning has earned the right to implement his vision for the region with Saturday’s crushing victory at the polls for himself and his Unity party.

With roughly triple the number of votes of outgoing mayor Val Shier and six out of 10 of his Unity candidates gaining a seat at the council table, Mr Manning can rightly declare he has the overwhelming endorsement of the community.

While his first priority will be to once and for all bury the Cairns Entertainment Precinct, Mayor Manning also has plenty of issues to address in the Douglas region in the near future.

He has already stated his commitment to work with independent Division 10 councillor Julia Leu, who also scored a commanding victory at the ballot box.

How this relationship develops is integral to the future prosperity of the region.

The next 12 months will be the most important in the short history of the regional council for us, with the issues of de-amalgamation and the Port Douglas Waterfront at the crossroads.

We should have a good understanding in the coming weeks about how the Mayor intends to tackle these.
