Port scores top advice

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - JESSIE TOLSON

THE beautiful natural environment, fantastic restaurants and perfect weather in Port Douglas has attracted the national spotlight and the crowds over the past week.

Port Douglas reached number three as a top holiday destination in Australia on tripadvisor. com, behind only Sydney and Melbourne.

Wotif.com also reported a 30 per cent surge in bookings to the region compared to the same period last year for the long weekend.

Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree executive officer Doug Ryan said the Trip Advisor result was great news.

“For the people who think we’re not on the map, well, here we are,” he said.

“The accommodation opera- tors are reporting this is the best year we have had in about three years.

“Wholesalers in the international and domestic markets are telling us that Port Douglas seems to be the flavour of the month.

“Things are improving and we are continuing our marketing down south and exposure from the TV programs Neighbours and My Kitchen Rules has definitely helped out.”

Melbourne’s Sara Iedema and her young family are visiting Port Douglas for the third time and it won’t be the last.

“We are visiting friends who recently moved to Port Douglas,” she said.

“We love the warm weather and friendly people.

“We love coming here as it gets us out of the cold Melbourne weather and into the laidback lifestyle.”
