Creatures of deep arrive

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

LOCAL waters are coming alive with sightings of some of our favourite marine creatures, including species once considered rare in these parts.

Whale sharks, minke whales, manta rays and dolphins have been spotted over recent weeks by local reef snorkel and dive boats.

Whale shark sightings were quite unusual in the Far North but there have been several around Ribbon Reef recently.

Poseidon owner Peter Wright said it was exciting to see the monstrous creatures in their element.

“We assume they are coming because of the nutrients in the water here a plankton are plentiful right now.

“We’ve had two recent sightings on Poseidon and one on Sailaway.”

Visitors to Four Mile Beach were surprised to see a three-metre manta ray last week, mere metres away from the shore.

The first of the minke whales to return to the area were also spotted last week by Sailaway owner Steve Edmondson, who has also spotted curious dolphins swimming right up to the boats to have a look lately.

“It’s great for tourists coming out on day trips to get a chance to interact with the marine life in such a way,” he said.
