Coast Guard gets boost

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

THE Port Douglas Yacht Club has bought 50 memberships from the Port Douglas Volunteer Coast Guard to help keep their head above water and strengthen ties between the clubs.

PDYC’S Colin Simpson said he and John Clifford from the Port Douglas Coast Guard are trying to create a “win-win situation” for both clubs.

“Every new yacht registration with the yacht club receives a free membership with the Coast Guard,” he said.

’The Coast Guard is a very important part of the local community and we are trying to help boost memberships.”

Mr Clifford said the Coast Guard raised about 7 per cent of its total annual running costs through donations and fundraising last year and is hoping to improve on that.

The PDYC is hosting a fundraising event in honour of the Coast Guard on Friday, May 25, with all proceeds donated to the Coast Guard. The festivities will kick off around midday and will be a great opportunity to mix with the Clipper Cup teams.
