THE Dou­glas Ju­nior Net­ball com­pe­ti­tion started last Tues­day with the 10/Un­der Pythons play­ing the Gla­di­a­tors, both teams came out fight­ing with looks of fierce de­ter­mi­na­tion in their eyes.

Pythons cen­tre Tayhla Ca­tienta was ev­ery­where show­ing her ver­sa­til­ity on the court and Libby Buzza in GK de­fended bril­liantly. T he sec­ond quar­ter saw the Gla­di­a­tors storm into the game with Jenna Ker­swell show­ing great skill all over the court. The sec­ond half was fast and fu­ri­ous with Gla­di­a­tors Kee­ley Poole and Heidi Pashen all over the ball, but the Python’s Char­lotte Dowl­ing on a shoot­ing streak kept the team up on goals.

Final score Pythons 6 def. Gla­di­a­tors nil. (re­port by Jodi Hep­ner). On Court 2 the Wild­catz played the Net Set Go girls, the teams com­bined to play evenly matched teams in teach­ing the new­com­ers to the game.

Jay Hei­dke was strong mov­ing the ball down the court and Jor­dan Scott fan­tas­tic in her favoured cen­tre po­si­tion.

Jas­mine Dodds also played well in at­tack. The Net Set Go play­ers demon­strated im­proved skills thanks to the older girls, Michaela Nes­bitt’s strength al­lowed her to make sev­eral great shoot­ing at­tempts, Grace Richard­son made some great in­ter­cepts and passes as GK and Edie Thurtell played a num­ber of court po­si­tions and moved well to­wards some open court to re­ceive solid passes. Thanks to the Wild­catz for sup­port­ing the Net­tas, you do your coach proud.

The 12/Un­der com­pe­ti­tion on court 1 saw the Di­a­monds play the Poi­son Ap­ples, the Di­a­monds sparkled from the first quar­ter, lead­ing 6 goals to 3 by half time, Piper Adams was ex­cel­lent in the goal cir­cle and Jas­mine Kirk piv­otal in mov­ing the ball to­wards goal. The Poi­son Ap­ples with great plays by Ella Dodds, Denby Woods and the ir­re­press­able Tiah Mclean played some great net­ball but not strong enough to over­come the Di­a­monds. Final score Di­a­monds 9 def. Ap­ples 5. Court 2 saw the Red Hot Pep­pers play the Miallo Al­ls­tars, each quar­ter the girls from each team fought hard for poses­sion of the ball with great um­pir­ing from the 14/Un­der girls and Coral Deen’s guid­ance the game kept a fast pace. Natayah from the Pep­pers was steam­ing hot and An­ndria Santa Cruz from Miallo Al­ls­tars con­tin­ued to ex­cel in all po­si­tions to help the Al­ls­tars score a 10 nil lead. The 14-16/Un­der Com­pe­ti­tion on Court 1 had the Fu­sion play­ing the 12/Un­der Reps, both teams played well the Reps came out fir­ing end­ing the first half only 1 goal down, Piper Adams for the Reps shot well for goal and made space in the goal cir­cle to re­ceive the ball, Cartier Ben­nett and Bon­nie Fran­cis put in great de­fen­sive games.

The Fu­sion picked up their pace in the sec­ond half mi­nus one of their older play­ers and had to dig deep to take the win, Mikaela Good­win was good in de­fence and Elle Kadwell was ever re­li­able mak­ing space and lead­ing well for the ball. Final score Fu­sion 26 def. Reps 16. Court 2 played the Vipers and the Break­ers, the Vipers who took a while to set­tle into the game with a lot of gig­gling go­ing on picked up their act with Saisha Scho­nen­berger in­ter­cept­ing well and Jade Schuck shoot­ing ac­cu­rately and en­er­getic in at­tack, Tayler Durie was very ef­fec­tive in WA and Cen­tre. The Break­ers with a wel­come back to Lucy Web­ster played well, Tyler Mous was great in­ter­cept­ing and Ge­or­gia Dun­can put in yet an­other ex­cel­lent game as GK, great to have Jess Vi­ola re­turn to the team, she played well shoot­ing some great goals. Final score Vipers 17 def. Break­ers 2. The Dy­na­mite played the Sap­phires on court 3, Dy­na­mite took a while to get started shoot­ing 4 goals to 10 by half time Me­gan Von Key­ser­lingk in goal de­fence in­ter­cepted very well and stuck to her player along with Si­mone Pringle who leapt well to gain in­ter­cepts. The Sap­phires played very good net­ball with some great pass­ing and po­si­tion­ing on the court, Brit­tany Bowen was a stand­out in the first quar­ter and a wel­come back to Frankie Web­ster from New Zealand re­join­ing Dou­glas Net­ball af­ter a break. In the 3rd quar­ter Dy­na­mite shot 9 goals to 2 mak­ing a strong come back but could not get the win. Final score Sap­phires 16 def. Dy­na­mite 15.

Dou­glas Net­ball is tak­ing a 11, 12, 14, 16/Un­der and a Se­nior Team to In­n­is­fail this week­end to com­pete in the Mar­lin Coast Net­ball Car­ni­val in a 2 day event start­ing Satur­day morn­ing and fin­ish­ing with pre­sen­ta­tion at 2pm on Sun­day at the In­n­is­fail Net­ball As­so­ci­a­tion. The car­ni­val pro­vides a fan­tas­tic op­por­tu­nity for our net­ballers to play against other teams in the re­gion and a great get to­gether for the teams, coaches and um­pires over the course of the week­end. Dou­glas Net­ball will pro­vide Fri­day night din­ner at the Fly­ing Fish Van Park and we look for­ward to a fun and sport­ing week­end. “red hot” Mitch Bohm who fin­ished with five ma­jors.
