Legend returning for RRR

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - ANGELIQUE PATTERSON

THE first professional to win both cross-country and downhill mountain-biking championships in Australia is ready to take on the Rural, Rainforest and Reef mountain bike event.

At the age of 47, Rob Eva has won many national Australian championships since he started riding 30 years ago and even though cross-country and downhill are different styles, he won both national championships in the same year in 1993.

The RRR has reached maturity in its 21st year and during the earlier years Eva won the event and is back again this year to reminisce and enjoy the experience.

“The adversity of the bike when we were riding is not quite like now, we didn’t have much of a choice, didn’t have full suspension, they were heavy bikes and not quality, I remember the ride not being as smooth as I’d like,” he said.

“We got to the rural area and it was just fantastic through the farmland and all of a sudden got to the rainforest and the bump track is like a waterfall with no water on the bottom with only rocks and boulders all the way down.

“The big finale was pulling onto the beach and seeing Port Douglas in the distance, riding on the sand is pretty tough but a beautiful finish line.”

Eva’s advice to first-time riders is to pace out the event and be sure to leave enough energy to battle the sand-ride to the finish line on Four Mile Beach.

“It gave a little bit of adrenalin but I got to the beach and was just dead where some guys took it easier on the race, it’s a tough way into town,” he said.

This time around, Eva is planning on catching up with old friends who he used to race against and said he will not be breaking any records, with zero preparation.

“I’m fit at the moment but I don’t think I’ll spend too much time sitting at the front, June is my off season but I’m looking forward to coming up and supporting the event,” he said.

The RRR mountain bike event will be held on Sunday, May 27, and for those who don’t want to do the 70km endurance ride from Mt Molloy can sign up for the 35km Classic.
