Ironman champ ready
RUNNER-UP World Ironman Champion Pete Jacobs is Australia’s top ironmen and will be out to prove his skills in the Coral Coast Triathlon in Port Douglas on May 27.
The Coral Coast triathlon is kicking off the Cairns Adventure Festival with a 1.5km swim at the northern end of Four Mile Beach, a 40km cycle to Mowbray and back to Four Mile Beach before the 10km run to finish the line.
There are three categories with different distances called enticer triathlon, sprint triathlon and the longest and hardest Olympic triathlon, which Australian Ironman champion Jacobs will be racing.
“It will be my first race up there at the Coral Coast triathlon, the first time ever racing in that area and I’m looking forward to a good hit-out before the following week’s bigger race the 70.3 Ironman Cairns,” he said.
“I’m hoping I can win it (Coral Coast), training is going really well and I’m really looking forward to racing the shorter distance to what I’m used to racing.
“It will be all over before I know it compared to what I’m used to - I’m hoping for a quick fast race and hopefully come away with a win.”
The professional triathlete is used to longer distances competing in ironman events around the world and is focusing on the world championship ironman in Hawaii in October.
“The world championship is the biggest triathlon in the world and that’s my focus for the year, to try and improve on my runnerup from last year,” Jacobs said.
“The commitment and hard work pays off when you compete and when it’s a job and everything you live for, you get a huge sense of accomplishment and relief and happiness from finishing.
“My best advice for people trying to get into it would be do the best you can on the day, often you get thrown from problems.
“Whether you lose nutrition or flat tyre, it’s all part of the challenge of a triathlon and getting to the finish line is the reward, regardless of how slow or fast.”
The Coral Coast Triathlon will start and finish at the northern end of Four Mile Beach on Sunday, May 27, and for more information about racing visit www.usmevents.com. au and follow the links.
