Diners brush off crash
NOT even the bus rolling over could stop some guests attending the Audi Palates of Port last Friday night from dusting themselves off and enjoying the Carnivale feature event.
Last Friday night around 7pm the Sun Palm transfer bus carrying 28 people, including the bus driver, crashed into an adjacent creek on Connolly Rd while on the way to Flames of the Forest in Mowbray Valley.
Five ambulance crews attended the scene to treat the injured passengers.
Port Douglas ambulance Officer-in-charge Craig Downing was the first on the scene and said they instigated a mass casualty plan to determine how many people were injured.
“Once we were able to determine how many actual patients we had we were able to scale back the mass casualty plan and transported patients to Mossman and Cairns,” he said.
“In the end we were very fortunate they did not have anyone with any major or serious injuries - there were closed-head injuries and fractures.”
A handful of passengers decided they needed a stiff drink and walked themselves to Flames of the Forest to enjoy the festivities.
Eight patients were transferred to hospital and once the emergency services had finished, three people chose to go home, while 16 people refused to let the incident ruin their night, according to Flames of the Forest’s Natalie Johnson.
“Some passengers on the bus did go in to the event and had a fantastic time, the event was sold out and we ended up with around 140 people,” she said.
“We spoke personally to everyone involved and everybody’s still waiting for the police report, which will come when it comes.
“Other than that, we spoke to the chefs working there and they had a really great time, it’s a nice thing that eight different chefs in Port coming together to create a spectacular menu.”
Carnivale organisers thanked everyone who helped at the scene and afterwards, including the Flames of the Forest and Sun Palm Transport and are waiting for the conclusion of the police investigation.
Quick response: emergency services rushed to the scene
