PERTH tourist Tom Batchelor took the plunge and proposed to girlfriend Rene Stefanetti literally on the reef this week.
Tom made quite a splash on a dive trip aboard Poseidon, secretly organising the romantic and unusual proposal with the help of Mark Fraenkel from Blue Dive.
“We went out diving the dday bbefore,f to increasei Rene’s R ’ diving confidence, and add an extra element of non-suspicion to the proposal,” Tom said.
“I had an underwater whiteboard with “will you marry me” written on it.
“I gave it to her while we were diving with a pen and she wrote, ’Hell’ above the yes box and ticked it immediately.
“Although we were wearing masks, I could still see the expressioni andd excitementi in her eyes, it was really special.”
Tom was very elusive with his plans, only letting local dive instructor Mark in on the secret to help organise his elaborate proposal.
“After we got off the boat we went back to our accommodation, cracked open the champagne and called unsuspicious friends and family to tellll themh off our great news,” Tom said.
Rene and Tom have been together for almost 10 years since they met in high school and plan to marry in early 2014.
“I’d love to thank Poseidon and Blue dive for ensuring everything ran smoothly and for an experience we will certainly never forget,” Tom said.
