Two lucky puppies

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - JESSIE TOLSON

TWO lucky puppies have been rescued after being found dumped on Old Port Rd recently.

Their brave brother had a more gruesome end after being swallowed by a python waiting for help to arrive.

Local women Jenine Jones and Carena Brookes were walking their dogs in the early morning on May 9 when they heard a low growl coming from bushes on the side of the road.

They stopped to take a look and saw three puppies shivering and dirty in the scrub.

They raced home to drop their own dogs off and pick up their car and blankets to wrap the puppies in and when they returned only two could be found.

“We searched the area looking for the third puppy,” Jenine said.

“It was early and still quite dark. We searched for about 10 minutes and then we saw the third with a python wrapped around it.

“If people can’t look after their animals, that’s okay, but they shouldn’t dump them. “There are options available. “It was just terrible. All because this person didn’t want them, these small, innocent puppies had to suffer a cold night alone, and hungry.

“When we found them, the bigger of the pups which turned out to be the only boy, was standing in front of his two sisters and appeared to be trying to protect them.”

The two surviving female puppies were taken to YAPS and have since been lucky enough to find their new homes.

If you are having difficulties looking after your pets and can no longer keep them, Paws and Claws Port Douglas and YAPS Cairns are animal shelters that take in abandoned pets.
