Show sport support
DO YOU know any of these sporty types?
Organisers and participants are urging locals to come an support the colour and spectacle as three major sporting events culminate on Four Mile Beach on Sunday.
Dozens of locals will join hundreds of athletes as they push themselves along the challenging selection of courses in the Coral Coast 5150 Triathlon, the RRR Mountain Bike Challenge and Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge.
Former Port Douglas ironman Nick Carling is supporting a number of his fitness training clients in the triathlon events.
“It’s great to have such a large scale local event that celebrates our coastline and gives athletes here a chance to perform,” he said.
“It’s especially encouraging when Port Douglas is going through hard times, for everybody to come together and join in a party atmosphere down on the beach.”
“There will be some proud achievements for many to celebrate.”
The sentiment of support seems to be echoed by many of the participating athletes.
“I have always watched the Coral Coast triathlon and always said I would take part - now I am - there’s sure to be a great crowd turn out for the event,” Coral Coast triathlon entrant Jess Coleman said.
Many locals are also proud to have the event celebrate the beautiful waters of the local coastline.
“We travel a lot to participate in these kinds of events,” said Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge competitor and team captain Wendy Morris.
“To have an event of this magnitude on our doorstep is fantastic; we have one of the most scenic coastlines in the world.”
All the action will kick off with the start of the triathlon from 6am, with organisers aiming for the vast majority of competitors in all three races to finish between 10am-1pm.
