Bridge repairs on way
CAIRNS Regional Council yesterday approved tenders for over $1.1 million to repair Whyanbeel’s Baio and Schulz Bridges, which are both in need of urgent works.
The work is set to begin straight away and Division 10 Councillor Julia Leu said the repairs will be completed as soon as possible.
“I am happy to announce we have agreed to engage contractors and approved a tender for Baio Bridge at $670,192.41 and Schulz at $511,644.60, including GST,” she said.
“The bridges have been deteriorating for some time particularly since Cyclone Yasi because they’re timber bridges and I’m pleased we’re going to get the money into the budget.”
Both bridges are in serious need of repair, with Baio Bridge suffered a catastrophic failure from deteriorating piles and concrete blocks were installed for support.
“They are in very poor condition and the renewal of Baio Bridge is considered a priority,” Cr Leu said.
“We’ve already gone through the design phase and engineers have worked out the type of bridge renewal or repair should happen and tenders have been approved and contracts will be signed.”
