Blocked drains, flooding and heroes

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

THE heavy rain blocked drains and caused flooding and damaging properties in Ribbon Close, Mudlo St, Mowbray St and Garrick St.

Council said underground pipeline maintenance crews were engaged prior to the wet season to inspect all major drains and clear any debris.

“Flooding in some areas of Reef Park will be investigated further as the drains behind properties in Ribbon Close were cleared in the last month,” a Cairns Regional Council spokesperson said.

“It is possible that illegal dumping in the area may have contributed to the clogging of these particular drains.

“Council encourages residents to properly dispose of green waste and other debris to avoid any impact on drains and other waterways.”

Council crews were busy removing trees on roads and dealing with flooding when they came to the assistance of a woman whose car was floating in Mudlo St.

The crews were able to tow the vehicle out of the water to higher ground and also rescued the woman from ending up in the creek that runs alongside Mudlo street.

Due to the combination of heavy rainfall and tidal issues, particular sites in Port Douglas are more prone to flooding and damage to the surface of Mowbray River Rd, where bitumen was washed away is also being investigated.
