Locals raise for cancer
EIGHT inspirational local teams have been busy fundraising to participate in the Cancer Council Queensland’s charity event Relay for Life.
Held on June 16 and 17 at Barlow Park in Cairns, Relay for Life opens at 3pm with a first lap dedicated to cancer survivors and their carer and there will be a candlelit ceremony in the evening, open to the general public and a closing ceremony at 9am on the following morning.
Teams from Mossman and Port Douglas signed up for the event include Actin Fitness, Blind Ambition, Phil Orchard, Port Lecure, Port Village People, Team Teaching and the Incredibles.
The Mossman Port Douglas Cancer Council Volunteer Branch raised over $10,000 last year for Relay for Life and team captain Jennellda Harlow said they would try hard to raise the same again this year.
“I have always supported the Cancer Council Queensland all of my adult life and I have had a team in the relay for life every year, it’s in its 11th year,” she said.
“We do fundraising activities and participate in the relay, last weekend we were doing a raffle at the bowls club who donated $5 of every meal sold and also a trivia night at the club and selling raffle tickets down the street.
“All our team members have a receipt book and are asking friends for donations.”
Ms Harlow said it is important to raise money for the Cancer Council because they are an independent charity that does not receive any government funding.
“Cancer Council Queensland helps fund heaps of research at the research centre in Brisbane and without research we’re never going to stop this horrible illness that’s killing way too many people,” she said.
“The other thing CCQ does is they provide some structured training for health professionals in cancer care and have cancer support services, but my passion is we need every cent for research to help find a reason or cure.”
If you would like to donate to the Mossman Port Douglas Volunteer Branch relay team, contact Jennellda Harlow on 4098 1126 or 4098 4922 and donate to Relay for Life at www.relayforlife.org.au
Port Village People consists of friendly doctors and nurses from the medical village and to fundraise they are conducting bulk-billed cancer checks tonight from 6pm and next week.
If you are due for a mole check, pap smear, breast or prostate check, this is a good opportunity and all money returned from the government will be donated.
