Pie’s ponder Port return
’’We have one bye to maximise the difference.
’’It is about recharging, revision and rejuvenation and as you can see the hard work still takes place.’’
And to the joy of Port Douglas Pies’ fanatic Cathy Sherwell that hard work involved a session late on Tuesday, led by a shirtless All-Australian Ben Reid and fellow star Heath Shaw, which was almost too much to bear.
’’I’m super excited, I’ve been looking for them all day,’’ Cathy Sherwell said.
’’I never believed I would be seeing them here.
’’I’ve barracked for them all of my life, some would say I’m obsessed.’’
For grey nomad Melbournite Sharon Leeworthy, who is camped in Port for the next three months, and who like Ms Sherwell has a Pies’ cover on her mobile phone the experience was as equally thrilling.
Despite the clear lack of atmosphere at the Crocs oval the long-term Collingwood club member compared where she was standing to her regular members spot at the MCG.
’’I love my club, it is wonderful they are here, my daughter will be green with envy,’’ she said.
While the group at the Crocs’ ground on Tuesday mainly consisted of those undergoing light recuperative work, the club’s sports science director David Buttifant, said yesterday had been designated a day off for all players.
’’It’s also about getting the boys together and having some general rest and recovery,’’ he said.
However, he said Thursday morning (today) would involve a more serious training session.
It is understood on Thursday (today) some players will later be acknowledging the Port Douglas Crocodiles’ club and passing on some wisdom to its players.
But keep an eye out at the training session for another AFL heavyweight and Brownlow winner James Hird.
The Essendon coach has been spotted by several locals in town with his wife and four children.
Why is not known, but it is an unlikely spying mission as the Bombers will not play the Magpies until the last round of the season.
Another unknown is if the visit is going to be a one-off or annual event.
When asked if the club would be coming back Buckley was coy but did not rule out a return visit next season.
