Bloggers love area

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - ANGELIQUE PATTERSON

TEN lucky competition winning bloggers from around the world have been blown away after five days of action-packed fun in the far north.

Tourism Queensland teamed up with Australia’s number one blogger Darren Rowse to organise the competition called Queensland Blogger Correspondent which started in Cairns and finished in Port Douglas last weekend.

The crew went on various trips including jungle surfing, trekking in the Daintree, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, helicopter rides, white-water rafting, stand-up paddling, Daintree river cruises, dinner at Flames of the Forest, On the Inlet and finished with the obligatory beer at the Courthouse Hotel in Port Douglas.

The Gazette caught up with Mr Rowse, who explained why he had taken up the challenge, and a couple of the bloggers before they boarded Quicksilver on their reef trip.

“I get pitched to all the time from PR companies wanting me to promote lots of things I didn’t believe in so I made a list of what I want to promote and Queensland was one of them,” he said.

“This is my attempt to get back to authentic blogging and Australia is a product I really believe in.

“And it’s great to see something new and exciting to work with the internationals that are lapping it up - it’s a dream come true to bring some of my readers out.”

Mr Rowse’s blog problogger.net has around 5 million readers a month and is an inspiration to the bloggers, such as Ameri- can Tsh Oxenreider, who won the trip to North Queensland and is her first time in Australia.

“I love warmer climates and Australia has always been on my bucket list, so it’s a dream come true,” she said.

“We have flown by helicopter to the Great Barrier Reef, that was fantastic, and one host who was a filmmaker for the new GBR BBC documentary caught a shark and held it up to us, it’s been fantastic.

“I’m a professional blogger with simplemom.net and it’s my fulltime job. Darren’s blog was one of the first blogs I had read and I always wanted to meet him, I love Darren and all he has done for my blog.”

Rebecca Cooper from Canada has a blog simpleasthatblog.com and when she entered the competition she said she thought she had no chance of winning.

“I entered and really wasn’t expecting much, I’m really thrilled to be on this trip, which is a once in a lifetime for me,” she said.

“My blog is categorised as a lifestyle blog, I am a photographer and I share photographs, tips and share latest craft projects, keeping it simple and about family lifestyle.

“This trip has been great, it’s been busy and I have been amazed at the things to do in such a small area of Australia - there’s so much to do here and people are really friendly and welcoming.”

The other bloggers were Malaysia’s U Mei The, Germany’s Katja Hentschel, UK’s Stuart Flatt and Jackie Hutchings , Americans Kara Williams and Jodi Friedman and Chantelle Ellem and Jess Van Den from Australia.
