LOVE them or hate them, the Collingwood Australian Rules Football kingpins certainly arouse passion. That much was evidenced by the response the die-hard fans who tracked down the secretive visitors on their first day in Port. And it must be said that the way the players and coach Nathan Buckley handled supporters and other footy fans at the Croc pit is to be commended. But for the Port Douglas economy it means much more than having a bunch of nice guys in town (ouch. . . as a Carlton supporter did I really say that?). In real terms the visit by the ladder leaders’ 60 strong contingent may have pumped a tidy sum into many Port businesses but the knock-on effect will be far greater. That effect stems from the huge media and public interest in anything the Magpies do. While it is hard to quantify an exact value, Port will be all over the sport pages and television for the duration of their stay. It is the kind of advertising campaign that simply cannot be be paid for. So we hope, and should encourage, that other teams from the major codes will follow.
