Raiders outsmart JCU
THE Reef Raiders travelled down to Smithfield on Saturday to take on the reigning premiers JCU. The Raiders put pressure on JCU right from the kickoff with the team managing to get great field position despite a strong defence from JCU. The Raiders had early opportunities and after ten minutes of pressure Phil Stewart crashed over for the first try. The boys then made some great inroads into JCU’s defence with some running rugby and pin point kicks which turned the opposition around and saw the Raiders be rewarded with a penalty. But the Raiders then made a few back to back errors which saw JCU over the Raider’s line. However, a second try for the Raiders resulted in a half-time lead 17-7.
The second half saw a complete reversal of the first with JCU having the majority of the field position for 30 minutes but only great cover defence and bad ball handling saw the Raiders hold strong.
Simon Chick scored but it was the forwards that provided the platform for the win. With the final score at 24-7.
The players that stood out his week were Ethan Hoffman, who looked dangerous every time he touched the ball, Phil “Disco Stew” Stewart who was a stand out in the forwards. But it was Cameron Smith as hooker who’s throwing and scrumming were what earned him man of the match. Next week will see the Raiders take on the Wanderers at home and a win will see them push up and hold onto second spot. Kick of will be at 4pm.
