A sweet crush

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

IN JUST the first week of the cane harvest, Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill has crushed 23,020 tonnes which is a good indication of a substantial harvest, according to the manager Haydn Slattery. The CCS (cane sugar content) of which the farmers are paid on is 12.09 on average so far. “This is a very good start to the season and the tonnage already harvested is a really good indication that we should have a big harvest,” Mr Slattery said. “The CCS is likely to rise further, we just have to wait and see but that won’t be the case if we get any heavy rain - that’s the last thing we want at the moment.”
