The night riders
EXTREME bike riding is more than a hobby for Johnny Riley, who is starting his own business heading down the Bump Track - at night.
The biking enthusiast and adrenalin junkie used to run a similar tour several years ago and decided to revive the concept as Hike and Bike Adventure Tours.
The tour starts with a drive up to Black Mountain Rd in Julatten just after sunset and a 1km warmup ride to the Bump Track before descending down the historic trail.
“It’s just a real adventure going into the darkened rainforest with the ghoulies and boogiemen - a lot of people will take to it because there’s not many tours for people at night,” Mr Riley said.
“It’s a single trail and it’s pretty much descending the whole way down to Robbins Creek, which is a beautiful freshwater clear creek we stop at to have a look at all the little fish and shrimp.
“We climb a hill out of there, then the rest is descending and the trail becomes quite steep so we pick up quite large speeds and fly downhill with some big jumps.”
Everyone is welcome to join the tour which is limited to six riders as long as they are fit and have basic biking experience, with the top of the range gear supplied along with expert guide Nonee O’Neil.
“It’s adrenalin plus and once you get to the bottom you pretty much want to go around and do it again,” Mr Riley said.
“As long as you’re that sort of person who can handle a bit of adventure.”
