Raiders get bonus win
THE Rattle ’n’ Hum Reef Raiders took on cellar dwellers Wanderers in their search for back to back wins last Saturday.
With confidence riding high in the club the boys took to the field, but it was Wanderers who come out with the fire in their belly and it was some great defence stoping the visitors getting over the line.
But after 10 minutes the Raiders settled down and started to wear the defence down and making inroads all over the park.
Josh Mezger was the first to cross the line after 20 minutes but that opened the flood gates for Grae Gilbert and Jackson Demler to post tries on the back of some great support play and field position.
At halftime the raiders were up 17-0 which was pleased the coach to see another half of no points scored against the team.
The second half was a special one as Liam Cowe became the first Junior Raider to come through the ranks and make his senior debut.
And he did not disappoint with his first two touches creating a try-scoring chance only for the support to be bundled out just one metre before the line, then a 50-metre run to give the Raiders great field position to see Simon Chick score 10 phases later after the run.
But to Wanderers’ credit they didn’t give up and scored two tries themselves including one really soft one.
But not to be outdone, Liam decided it wasn’t the last points of the game with himself scoring a try on debut much to the delight of his mum on the hill and dad playing.
The final score was a bonus point win to the raiders 29-14.
The players of the day went to paul ferrero, liam cowe and paddys man of the match went to Dad "disco stew".
Next week sees the Raiders head to west Barlow Park to take on ladder leaders Barron Trinity, who will be fired up after their first lost last week, so a much improved effort will be needed if the Raiders are to keep winning and hand Barron their second loss of the year.
