Excellent conditions for race 6

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

RACE 6 of the Poseidon Sailaway Club Championship Winter Series provided excellent conditions for the seven yachts involved.

The race was delayed 30 minutes to avoid the low tide and the boats crossed the line in a gentle 10 to 12-knot breeze.

Immediately a close race developed for pole position between Magic and Ann Sea flying her new headsail for the first time.

Ice was in close pursuit followed by Port FM Mais Oui and Indigo with Tau Ceti and Miriama giving up precious time through a late start.

Magic hit the lead and managed to hold off all challengers taking line honours in 1:41:37 closely followed by Ann Sea, Ice and Port FM Mais Oui with Indigo crossing ahead of Tau Ceti and Miriama retiring.

Just how close the fleet was on handicap corrected time was revealed at the presentation after the race.

Indigo placed fifth, only nine seconds behind fourth place Ann Sea and Magic was beaten into third place a mere two seconds behind second placed Port FM Mais Oui. Claiming a fifth straight series win Ice again crept into the top spot on handicap to further tighten her grip on the Winter Series.

Drops come into play for race 7 and 8 in the coming weeks with each boat able to drop her two worst results which means most boats are still in with a chance to claim a share of the prize pool with a top three place.

In the overall Poseidon Sailaway Club Championship Series after 14 races Ice (44) holds a narrow one point lead over Magic (45) and Ann Sea (46).

Racing continues this Saturday.
