Two island sail and run gets set to head off
ONE of the region’s most unusual marathon events - the Port Douglas Yacht Club Two Island Sail and Run - is back for the third year and promises a unique and exciting experience.
The seven-stage marathon involving sailing, swimming and running is the third race in the 2012 Close Haven Marina Trophy Series, to be held on July 28.
The yachts depart from Port Douglas Yacht Club to the start line off Four Mile and race to Low Isles.
Once there an athlete swims ashore, sprints around the island and then swims back to the yacht. The yachts then sail around both isles before racing back to Four Mile Beach, where the athlete then sprints to the lookout on Flagstaff Hill before running back to the yacht club where finish times will be recorded.
PDYC’s rear commodore Mick Gwilliams has invited athletes interested in being part of this race to contact the yacht club for entry details.
“This is a special and unique event for Port Douglas, I’m not sure there is anything like this event anywhere else, and we are hoping it will grow over the coming years,” he said.
“We are always looking for athletes to join the crews, if they contact the yacht club we can put people in touch with yacht teams who are still looking for crew members.”
