Winter solstice shootout

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

ARCHERS travelled from as far away as Townsville to compete in the Mossman Archery Club’s winter solstice shoot last weekend.

The competition was held in near perfect conditions over two days for the Mossman club’s second interclub tournament.

Most archers shot a 70-metre ranking round on both days with the junior archers shooting shorter distances.

One crossbow shooter shot a benchrest round in preparation for the upcoming world championships.

While the locals showed plenty of skill, Townsville’s Peter Mulligan proved too good in the master men’s division with a score of 1966.

In the open men’s division, Neil Stallard from the Tableland Co of Archers finished on top with a score of 1955 ahead of Mossman Archery Club’s Chris Thomas and Mike Wilkinson.

Sue Stallard from the Tablelands won the masters women’s division with Helen Bochow, also from the Tablelands, won the veterans women’s and George Neilson from the Tablelands the veterans men’s.

Mossman’s Bryce Fabiani flew the flag with victory in the cub boys’ competition.

The Mossman Archery Club is holding an open day this Sunday for anyone who would like to try archery for a cost of $5 with all equipment and tuition supplied.

There will be a barbecue and drinks available with competitions and giveaways.

Shooting will start at 9.30am at the Mossman Rifle Range which is located 4.4km north of the Port Douglas turn-off on the Captain Cook Highway.
