Be prepared

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FEEDBACK -

DEAMALGAMATION for the most of us will be fantastic.

We will be able to get back control of the money we pay as our rates.

Our new council will be able to direct our rate monies to the part of our new Douglas shire to areas where it is most needed.

Before this can be achieved, we must take the time to be informed of the relevant procedures and up-to-date costs of this exercise.

Let’s not go into this venture without the knowledge we will come out as well off as we were when amalgamation was forced upon us without our consent or consultation.

We should all look at the information available as to the procedure of deamalgamation, so that we will all be 100 per cent informed of this procedure and will all be able to contribute to the decisions that will have to be made by the majority of the former shire.

The decision is up to us, but let’s look at the real upfront cost to us all.

The figure of $3 million which has been put into the public eye is not even half the amount required by this most important venture. So let’s get prepared. Unprepared deamalgamations have already led to rate rises of 50-75 per cent.

Let’s get informed of procedures. Let’s get informed of real costs.

Now, if it all adds up, let’s do it. But let’s be prepared, informed, confident and very careful.
