MACKAY Sugar Ltd which owns the Mossman mill is seeking to top up supplies of cane from properties on the Tablelands from next year.
The company recently submitted a report to the Tablelands Regional Council which explained nine farmers from the Tolga, Atherton and Mareeba areas had expressed an interest in growing sugar cane.
If the farmers did switch to sugar cane production, it would require B-Double trucks on a number of council-controlled roads.
The report said that in the past, the council had agreed to a program of intersection upgrades with the industry.
Mackay Sugar is offering four-year contracts for growers and will also advise growers on the best type of grain to grow for their soil.
