Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

A FAMILY-FRIENDLY fitness day in the park will be held on Saturday as the Port Douglas Solar Eclipse Marathon training squad host a fun run to warm up for the main event.

The fun run has an Olympics dress up theme in honour of the 2012 London Olympics, which also starts on the weekend.

Organiser Nick Carling said there are three run options, 1km, 3km and 5km for everyone of all fitness levels to join in and help raise money for the PDSEM training squad.

“It’s a fundraiser to raise funds for the training squad to put on full training for free to improve fitness and get involved in the marathon or half marathon,” he said.

“We’ve hired a professional coach to put a program together and raising cash for that and also it’s a good chance for people to get involved in the fun run and not have to go to Cairns.

“Dress up in green or gold or from whatever country you come from, in gymnastic stuff or Speedos and have fun, there’s also going to be a couple of free fitness classes afterwards for those who want to stay around and join in.”

Registration is at 6.30am at Rex Smeal Park, the 5km run costs $15 and starts at 7.30am, 3km is $10 and starts at 7.35am and the 1km is 45 and starts at 7.40am and then at 8.30am there is a group Kick and 9.30am Group Centergy classes.

To re-energise after the fitness and fun, Coles is supplying a barbecue breakfast for everyone.
