Smith new OIC

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - ANGELIQUE PATTERSON

MOSSMAN police station’s longserving senior constable Mathew Smith has been promoted to Sergeant and will assume the role of Officer-in-Charge from next Monday.

After 12 years serving the community, Sergeant Smith has taken over the position from Senior Sergeant Ed Lukin, who transferred to Smithfield.

Sgt Smith said he was in awe of the support he has received since taking on the senior position.

“It’s unusual for a police officer to spend so long in one location and it’s often been suggested by doing so was potentially causing damage to my career path but everything has worked out,” he said.

“The support has been amazing that I have received support from all aspects of the community, from the business community to the Aboriginal community, everyone’s been amazing and made it feel my decision to stay was worthwhile.

“The Mossman area is a beautiful part of the world and at present, it’s a safe and friendly place to live, work and raise your kids and I will continue to keep it that way.”

Sgt Smith said the application process was tough with over 20 applicants for the position.

“I will bring to the job local knowledge and a hard work ethic, Mossman station is a very effective well run station due to the efforts of the former Sergeant Lukin (former OIC),” he said.

“We will continue to try improve our quality of service we provide, the Mossman community is still growing and we will have to adapt accordingly, the area is booming at the moment.

“Mossman is in the upper of small stations, if we were any bigger we would be a 24-hour station with a senior sergeant, without getting technical I am paid as any other sergeant just with a lot more responsibilities of being in charge.”

Sgt Smith said he will be transitioning into the position over the next six months and will be running the station as normal but has a couple of project ideas for farther down the track.

He said the only difference will be the change in attitude from the rest of the officers, who have given positive feedback about his promotion.

“It’s always tough going from one of the boys to the boss because I have to crack the whip and I won’t get invited for beers anymore,” he said.
