Decade of learning
THE Port Douglas Community Kindergarten is celebrating its 10th birthday after a decade of learning, games, friendships and fun.
In June 2002, parents of 15 children decided a kindy was needed in Port Douglas and through continual fundraising built their own facility on the Port Douglas State School grounds and covered running costs.
Director and teacher Erica Whillas said it was because of their hard work, inspiration and dedication the PDCK has seen almost 400 students walk through their doors.
“We started with nothing and the fundraising has been so necessary but what has made it amazing is the support of the town, Port Douglas is such an amazing community,” she said.
“It’s the only reason why we are in our own purposebuilt building with a beautiful natural playground is because of the community and the hardworking parents on the committee each year.”
Ms Whillas said PDCK bases its learning on an “emergent” curriculum, focusing on each child’s individual interests and learning through those interests.
“The children come along excited about something or have found something or got something to show and they share with us then we take them on a journey of learning through that,” she said.
The current students of PDCK have been busy preparing for their birthday party and started out making party hats - but on Tuesday morning they turned into ninja masks.
One ninja, Brae Agrums, said the best thing about birthday parties is the glorious birthday cake.
“I like eating the cake, strawberry cake,” he said.
Fellow ninja Toby Evans agreed.
“I like blowing out the candles on a birthday and I love eating ice cream on my cake,” he said.
Xavier Mullane said he likes opening the birthday presents, Campbell Yarr is all for the party-bags while Tahli Flinn likes to dance at birthday parties and Isla Roberts can remember her last birthday party.
“I like playing pass the parcel, I got it for my birthday and I won a bubble gun,” she said.
To help the students and teachers celebrate 10 years, PDCK invites all past students and their parents back for an afternoon of playtime and birthday cake this Sunday afternoon from 12pm to 2pm, fancy dress is optional.
