Cemetery smash arrest
A 40-YEAR-OLD transient man staying in Port Douglas has been arrested over the desecration of around a dozen headstones at the Port Douglas cemetery.
The incident occurred on July 30 when the man allegedly destroyed several headstones, breaking them and spraying graffiti with clay putty.
On Tuesday, Port Douglas Police charged the man with wilful damage and transported him to the Cairns watch house where he faced the Cairns Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Port Douglas’s officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Damian Meadows said the man originates from South Australia and came to Port Douglas via New South Wales, with a criminal history in both states.
Cairns Regional Council is yet to determine the exact cost to repair the damage.
