Mossman man hit by truck
A MOSSMAN father killed while sleeping on the road last week was the sixth person to die in similar circumstances in just 12 years.
The Mossman community is in mourning after 26-year-old Lionel Bamboo was killed when he was hit by a truck on Alchera Drive last Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 11.45pm near the corner of Alchera Dr and Blain St where Bamboo was allegedly asleep on the road.
One eyewitness, who wished not to be named, said he had seen Mr Bamboo on the road prior to the incident and thought his friends, who were nearby, were going to move him to safety.
The B-double truck driven by a 28-year-old White Rock man allegedly did not see him on the road when the truck hit him.
The distraught truck driver stopped immediately and authorities were quickly at the scene but nothing could be done to save Mr Bamboo.
Mossman police officer-in-charge Sergeant Mathew Smith said Mr Bamboo, who recently celebrated the birth of his first child, was well known in the Mossman Gorge community. “He was bit of a larrikin,” he said. “I had only spoken to him that day and he will be sadly missed.
“The Mossman community is definitely in shock and mourning.
Sadly, this has happened before in Mossman.
“I have been here for 12 years and I can think of six people off the top of my head.”
The truck driver was uninjured but was treated for shock and the Forensic Crash Unit seized the truck for standard vehicle inspections. Further investigations were carried out at the scene last Sunday.
On the night of the tragedy, an unknown offender smashed the windows of the nearby Caltex petrol station nearby in frustration.
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. If you have any information contact Mossman Police on 4098 2177 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
