Under 16s just make the finals
the Crocs Under-16s have beaten the odds to reach the finals THE Under-16s Crocs have scraped into the finals the hard way, grabbing the final spot by beating the top three teams three weeks in a row.
The boys were all but out of finals contention one month ago but showed plenty of spirit and trust in each other to notch victories over top teams North Cairns, Centrals top-placed Manunda Hawks last week to qualify for a shot at the premiership.
To the boys’ credit they again stuck to the game plan and the result took care of itself, albeit in a nail-biter. After leading by as much as 30 points the weary Crocs took their foot off the accelerator in the last quarter and allowed the Hawks a sniff of victory.
But luckily for some heroics from the backs, Ethan and Braden, the Hawks would have run then Crocs down.
Other great performances came from rookie ruckman Scottie and first gamer Jack Dickson. Up forward, the likes of Charlie, Mitch and Quinny kept the scoreboard ticking over, all the while being fed by Ashley Davidson who clearly set the game up for the Crocs with a dominant first half.
Davo had great support from Chaseley, and Jake and Aiden who were a real handful for the Hawks’ defence. Overall it was a great team effort.
They now travel to North Cairns for the minor semifinal on Friday night but coach Greg Nicholson said they had proved themselves regardless of the outcome.
“The boys had shown a lot of promise through the year but hadn’t delivered on it before their run to the finals so I always knew they had it in them,” he said.
“They just had to work on the basics we’ve been practicing on at training and improve their decision-making and trust each other more and the results would come their way. “And of course brilliant coaching helps. “They’re more than capable of winning the competition but they can be proud of their efforts anyway.” Final scores: Crocs 9-6-60 defeated the Hawks 8-4-52. Goal kickers: Mitch 2, Ashley 2, Charlie 2, Jackson 1, Casey 1, and Quinny 1.
Best players: Scott, Brayden, Ethan, Jake and Ashley and Greg Nicholson.
